长句指形体长、词数多、结构复杂的句子。主要因修饰成分多、并列成分多或结构层次多而形成。一般适用于精确、周密、细致地描述事理间的复杂关系。长句多用于书面语体，如政论、科技语体。一般而言，英语句子长于汉语句子，其主要原因是：英语造句偏重在关系上做出反映，从关系上求说明，关系词与关联手段非常丰富。英语长句译成汉语的一般原则是分译、短译，有必要时按信息结构和语义内容重新安排译语语序。例如：
The growth of class consciousness among the workers was inhibited by continued high levels of employment and rising earning for almost 15 years，combined with the propaganda of views in the labor movement reflecting the influence of Keynesian theories about the ability of capitalism to solve permanently the problem of “bloon and bust”through a “managed economy”of built-in stabilizers.将近十五年来，就业率一直保持高水平，工资收入不断增长。加之，劳工运动中宣传受凯恩斯理论影响的观点（这种理论认为资本主义制度有能力通过具有内在稳定机制的“国家调节经济”来永久解决繁荣与萧条的交替出现的问题）。以上因素结合在一起，阻碍了工人阶级觉悟的提高。
汉语长句的英译经常照译为一句。但也有分译的，如：最根本的因素，还是经济增长速度，而且要提现在人民的生活逐步地好起来，人民看到稳定带来的实在好处，看到现行制度、政策的好处，这样才能真正稳定下来，不论国际大气候怎样变化，只要我们争得这一条，就稳如泰山。（《邓选》）The crucial factor is economic growth，which will be reflected in a gradual rise in living standards.Only when people have felt the tangible benefits that come with stability and with the current systems and policies will there be true stability.No matter how the international situation changes.so long as we can ensure appropriate economic growth，we shall stand as firm as Mount Tai.
除了分译外，句子结构的重新组合是长句翻译的重要方法之一。
