不同语言的词义差异很大，大量词汇都存在着一词多义，翻译时需要寻找它们的“汇合点”。词义选择主要受各种语境因素的制约：
1.词的搭配及上下文（以appreciate为例）：He can appreciate modern music.（欣赏）/I do not appreciate fully what he means.（理解）/I apprecia the regard you have for me，but I’m not qualified to take on the job.（感谢）；
2.词的语法特征：This quiet room became them perfectly.（become vt.适宜）/go to church（去做礼拜），the Church of England（英国教会）（church大小写词义有别）；
3.汉语表达习惯：The new rules are working well.（执行）The teatment works like magic.（起作用）；
4.词的专业特征：to do work（作功——物理学），the works of a watch（手表零件——机械）；
5.文体：Men are good in one way，but bad in many.（谚语）人之善者同出一辙，人之恶者多种多样。
